At Barthelette Law, we proudly represent bicycle accident victims throughout the State of Florida. In previous blog posts, we have looked closely at Florida’s bicycle accident statistics for 2019, Florida’s interim bicycle accident statistics for 2020, and Florida’s final bicycle accident statistics for 2020. In this blog post, let’s look at Florida’s 2021 bicycle accident statistics.

These statistics cover the dates from January 1, 2021 to July 28, 2021 and are taken from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles’ website. We will continue to report on Florida’s bicycle accident statistics as the year progresses.

Before we look at Florida’s 2021 bicycle accident statistics, remember to ride your bicycle defensively and safely. According to the U.S. News & World Report, Florida is the third most dangerous state for cyclists. Indeed, while Florida’s beautiful climate gives cyclists the opportunity to ride year round, riding your bicycle in Florida can be dangerous. Again, ride safely!

Let’s now look closer at Florida’s 2021 bicycle accident statistics.

  1. How many bicycle accidents have there been so far in 2021?
  2. How many bicycle accidents have there been in Palm Beach County in 2021?
  3. How many bicycle accidents have there been in Broward County in 2021?
  4. How many bicycle accidents have there been in Miami-Dade County in 2021?
  5. How many bicycle accidents have there been in Duval County in 2021?
  6. How many bicycle accidents have there been in Hillsborough County in 2021?
  7. Where are most bicycle accidents occurring – streets, highways, sidewalks, etc.?
  8. Is Covid-19 having an impact on bicycle accidents?

How many bicycle accidents have there been so far in 2021?

As of July 28, 2021, there have been 3,421 bicycle accidents in Florida. In 2020, there was a total of 5,948 bicycle accidents. Consequently, it appears that in 2021 we are on track to have roughly the same total number of bicycle accidents as seen in 2020. Of course, the total number of bicycle accidents will continue to grow as we have approximately 5 months left in 2021.

Additionally, so far there have been 83 fatal bicycle accidents in Florida.

How many bicycle accidents have there been in Palm Beach County in 2021?

To date, there have been 231 bicycle accidents in Palm Beach County, which includes 4 fatal bicycle accidents.

How many bicycle accidents have there been in Broward County in 2021?

In Broward County, there have been 394 bicycle accidents, which includes 9 fatal bicycle accidents.

Notably, so far in 2021 Broward County has almost two times the amount of bicycle accidents as compared to Palm Beach County.

How many bicycle accidents have there been in Miami-Dade County in 2021?

Interestingly, Miami-Dade County is the most populated state in Florida with 2,699,428 residents. As a result, has Miami-Dade County had the most bicycle accidents in 2021? Let’s see what the statistics say.

In 2021, there have been 445 bicycle accidents in Miami-Dade County, with 7 fatal bicycle accidents.

Based on my review of the statistics, Miami-Dade County has had the most bicycle accidents of any county in Florida.

How many bicycle accidents have there been in Duval County in 2021?

Duval County has seen 142 bicycle accidents, which includes 3 fatal bicycle accidents.

How many bicycle accidents have there been in Hillsborough County in 2021?

Hillsborough County is Florida’s fourth largest county by population. How many bicycle accidents have there been in Hillsborough County this year?

Hillsborough County has seen 237 bicycle accidents – with 4 bicycle accident fatalities.

Where are most bicycle accidents occurring – streets, highways, sidewalks, etc.?

This is difficult to tell, but according to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles approximately 51.36% of bicycle accidents were investigated by police departments, 31.16% of bicycle accidents were investigated by sheriff departments, and 17.39% of bicycle accidents by the Florida Highway Patrol. The Florida Highway Patrol is responsible for the state highways.

Looking at these statistics, it is safe to reasonably assume the bulk of bicycle accidents occurred on city streets and roads – not the highway – given that police departments and county sheriffs investigated the majority of bicycle accidents.

Further, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the majority of bicycle accidents occur in urban areas (78%) as compared to rural areas (22%), and between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Is Covid-19 having an impact on bicycle accidents?

As we have discussed before, Covid-19 created a large demand for bicycles. Was there a corresponding increase in bicycle accidents?

At this time, it is difficult to tell. However, Florida saw less bicycle accidents in 2020 (5,948 bicycle accidents) than in 2019 (6,678 bicycle accidents). This, of course, does not tell the entire story because it does not include statistics from other states.
