But one of the unexpected and pleasant surprises of Covid-19 is the increase in bicycle use. Indeed, bicycle sales in South Florida have exploded since Covid-19 hit in March 2020. But what about bicycle accidents? What are the latest statistics? Here are Florida’s 2020 bicycle accident statistics from January 1, 2020 to November 19, 2020.[1]
First: Number Of Bicycle Accidents
In 2020, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles notes that there have been 5,082 bicycle crashes. Notably, this is a decrease from 2019, which had 6,663 bicycle crashes.
Second: Number Of Fatal Bicycle Accidents
This year, 127 Florida bicyclists lost their lives in bicycle accidents. Notably, this statistic appears to be heading in the right direction as 155 Florida bicyclists lost their lives in bicycle accidents in 2019.
Third: Palm Beach County Bicycle Accident Statistics
In 2020, Palm Beach County has 305 bicycle crashes with 9 bicycle accident deaths. Importantly, this is increase from last year as Palm Beach County had 5 bicycle accident deaths in 2019.
Fourth: Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade Counties
In 2020, there have been 1,450 total bicycle crashes, with 21 bicycle fatalities. Not surprisingly, the tri-county area is responsible for a significant percentage of total bicycle accidents in Florida.
Fifth: What To Make of Florida’s 2020 Bicycle Accident Statistics
Overall, it appears the total number of bicycle accidents and bicycle deaths will be less this year than 2019. Why? One possible explanation is that more people are working from home and driving less. With less drivers, the roads may be safer for bicyclists. As life returns to normal and more people commute to work, it will be interesting to see where the statistics head.
