At Barthelette Law, we are proud to represent bicycle accident victims. In a previous blog post, we discussed Florida’s 2020 bicycle accident statistics from January 1, 2020 to November 19, 2020. What happened from November 20, 2020 to December 31, 2020? Here are Florida’s final 2020 bicycle accident statistics.

First: Total Number of Bicycle Accidents In Florida

In 2020, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles notes there were a total of 5,919 bicycle crashes. In 2019, there were 6,663 bicycle crashes.

How do we account for this decrease, especially since we know bicycle sales and usage have skyrocketed during Covid-19? Perhaps it is due to the fact that driving is down, since more people are working from home.

Second: Total Number of Fatal Bicycle Accidents

In 2020, 157 Florida bicyclists lost their lives. This means from November 20, 2020 to the end of the year 30 additional Florida bicyclists lost their lives in bicycle accidents.

Additionally, in 2019 155 Florida bicyclists lost their lives in accidents. As a result, there was a slight increase in bicycle accident deaths in 2020.

Third: Final Palm Beach County Bicycle Accident Statistics

In 2020, Palm Beach County saw 361 bicycle crashes and 11 fatal bicycle crashes. Consequently, from November 20, 2020 to December 31, 2020 there were 2 fatal bicycle accidents and 56 additional bicycle crashes.

Fourth: Final Palm Beach, Broward, and Dade Counties Statistics

In 2020, there were 1,717 total bicycle crashes, with 26 deaths.

In 2019, the tri-county area saw 1,972 total crashes with 34 deaths.

Similar to the statewide decrease in crashes, the tri-county saw a decrease in crashes in 2020.

Fifth: What Do We Make Of These Statistics

Thankfully, the numbers are trending down.

How will Covid-19 continue to affect bicycle accidents? We will continue to post blogs on this topic!
