At Barthelette Law, we proudly represent motorcycle accident victims. In a previous blog post, we reviewed Palm Beach County’s 2020 motorcycle accident statistics. Well, what about Florida’s 2020 motorcycle accident statistics?
We will look at them closely in this blog post!
First: Total Number of Motorcycle Accidents In Florida
In 2020, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles noted 8,043 motorcycle crashes. In 2019, there were 8,910 motorcycle crashes.
How do we account for the decrease in motorcycle accidents?
Interestingly, motorcycle sales increased substantially during the pandemic. However, fewer drivers were on the roads during the pandemic. Importantly, this decrease in traffic may explain why we saw fewer motorcycle accidents in 2020.
Second: Total Number of Fatal Motorcycle Accidents
In 2020, 551 Florida motorcyclists lost their lives. Additionally, in 2019 552 Florida motorcyclists lost their lives in motorcycle accidents.
So, it is clear motorcycle fatalities were the almost the same, despite the difference in the total number of motorcycle accidents.
Third: Percentage of Motorcycle Accidents Involving Injuries
As noted above, in 2020 there were 8,043 motorcycle accidents in Florida. Of the those 8,043 accidents, 6,920 accidents involved injuries.
So, this means that in 2020 approximately 86% of motorcycle accidents involved injuries.
In 2019, of the 8,910 motorcycle accidents, 7,732 involved injuries. Consequently, this means that approximately 87% of motorcycle accidents involved injuries.
Consequently, the percentage of motorcycle accidents involving injuries remained steady from 2019 to 2020.
Fourth: Palm Beach, Broward, and Dade Counties Combined Statistics
In 2020, there were 1,880 total motorcycle crashes, with 129 deaths.
In 2019, the tri-county area saw 2,090 total crashes with 99 deaths.
Similar to the statewide decrease in motorcycle crashes, the tri-county area saw a decrease in crashes in 2020.
Fifth: What Do We Make Of These Statistics
Fortunately, the number of motorcycle accidents is trending down. Will this trend continue? As more people return to work, will the number of motorcycle accidents increase? Only time will tell.
