Bicycle Safety – What To Do When You Are On The Road

In our last blog post, we talked about safety steps you can take before riding your bicycle. But what about when you are riding your bicycle? Here are some bicycle safety tips for when you are on the road.

First Bicycle Safety Tip: Ride Defensively

Ride defensively. Never assume a driver sees you on your bicycle. Unfortunately, many drivers in Florida drive distracted. According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, in 2018 there were more than 52,000 accidents caused by distracted driving.

When you are riding your bicycle, be the first to take action and avoid it. And always be on the look out for dangers, debris, or anything that might cause you to lose control of your bicycle.

Second Bicycle Safety Tip: Always Stay Alert

Second, be alert and don’t do anything that might distract you. For example, don’t wear headphones, check your cell phone, or do anything else that takes your focus off of the road.

Your senses should be fully engaged during your bicycle ride.

Third Bicycle Safety Tip: Obey All Traffic Laws

Third, obey all traffic laws. Under Florida law, bicyclists have the same rights and duties as drivers.

Obey stopping signals, stops signs, yield signs, and all other rules of the road.

Fourth Bicycle Safety Tip: Let Drivers Know Where You Are Going

Fourth, ride in a way that drivers know where you are going. Don’t make any unpredictable movements. Instead, alert drivers when you intend to turn by signaling your turns and when you are about to change lanes.
